Bitten - update

Hello all!
For any of you actually waiting to hear about my next book Bitten, I'm sad to say that I am now a few weeks behind schedule. I'm about 51,000 words in and my goal length was 60,000. However, it looks like it might be a little longer than that. Hopefully I'll be done writing soon and I'll be able to start the editing phase and commissioning the cover art.

Some of you may notice that this book's length is significantly shorter than the first. I've had a few requests that the books be faster reads (Plus, other ebook authors recommend a length of 50,000 words. However I think that is much closer to novella length (avg 40,000) than a real book (60,000-90,000)). This means cutting a lot of background information. Depending on time constraints, and my mood, I may compile these into short stories later. Maybe I'll just be lazy and make them into character blurbs here on my blog. That way those who are interested can pop over for a visit.

Before I forget again, I should also mention that I have reduced the chapter lengths. Dont be surprised when you see a lot of chapters despite the large chunk taken out of the word length. With Enthralled I underestimated the leap in length my chapters would take when converted from word to ebook format. (The chapter's lengths tended to double.) So, the book has been cut into smaller sections to make the chapters less daunting.

On a more interesting note, I have been considering a few different promotional options for the holidays. I WAS leaning towards offering Enthralled on Amazon's new book lending library for prime members, but I found that the program wasn't suited for me and probably not my readers. For one thing, you have to be a prime member, not just any schmuck with an account (like me). Then I found out you can only borrow one book every month and you have to read it on a Kindle (Note: books borrowed through their library by prime members cannot be lent to their friends. You have to own it to lend it.). The program isn't compatible for  their kindle apps. So having a computer or smart phone with the app isn't enough. Plus, I would have to offer my book exclusively through them during a 90 day contract. That would give each person 3 chances to borrow it during the contract time period. And not to rag on myself but I have a feeling that there will be a few more popular books available during that time.

This sounds alot more appealing for authors that are already well known and have a ton of old books that they could offer so newer readers can get caught up in a series in time for a new release. Being that I am not in that situation I think I'll just generate a promotional coupon through smashwords for Christmas or new year. I want it to be near the release of the sequel so anyone that hasn't read the first can pick it up. I'll have to decide on that soon so I can let everyone know...

You may be wondering why I'm even bothering you with information about an option that I'm not going to use. Well, if you have heard of Amazon's program and are wondering why I'm not on it despite selling books through them, now you know. If, one day, I am flooded with countless readers asking me to put my older books up there then I will consider it. But its just not a real viable option at this time. Even if I tried their lending library and found that I didn't like it I CAN pull the book, but it still has to be offered exclusively through Amazon until the end of the 90 day period. So I don't even want to try it right now if it could potentially cause me a lot of grief. (I also wanted to rant a little)

Tell me what you think.

Anyway, I hope you all are looking forward to the holiday season. Best wishes!

Been a while...

Hi all,
I realize that it has been a while since I made a post. Sorry about that. I just never know what to post about.

Since my last post I have had a bout with the flu and that slowed me down for a while. After that I was so busy marketing Enthralled that I have not spent as much time on the next book as I probably should have.

Yes. I have finished researching/planning for the second book in the series. Actually, I finished most of that weeks ago. However, I am a few chapters into the writing phase. I also have a good idea of what I want the title to be but its not set in stone.

Since I have not posted in a while I feel I ought to put out a sample. Just a teaser from the beginning of the next book. Keep in mind that I have not edited much as of yet. Also, since the book isn't finished yet what you read here may be subject to change. But I like this part of the story so I will try to keep it in. I would think that if I did end up making changes that they would be minor ones anyway. So here you go:

Annette shrieked for Conrad to stop, but the words exploded from her mouth a fraction of a second too late. His needle like teeth slashed clean through Blaine’s throat, dissecting both of his carotids. The crimson spray flashed over the walls and the man went down with Conrad glued to his chest.
The color ran from Annette’s already pale face. She had caught the look of aggression in Conrad’s stance moments before he attacked. She had thought he could contain himself, but she had been wrong.
Now in mere seconds the life would bleed away from the slender young man Annette had come to know as the Lycaon’s third in command. The Lycaon was not someone that Conrad could afford to anger; especially not now, when he was so close to being released from the Guild’s care.
Annette cursed and latched onto Blaine’s neck with both hands. She had seen a werewolf heal from injuries that would have killed a human before. However, Annette doubted that even a wolf could survive this much blood loss.
Conrad lowered his hackles and stepped off of Blaine’s chest. Shock was still evident in the man’s hazel eyes. He mustn’t have seen this coming. Or at least, he must not have expected Conrad to go through with the attack.
“Flynn!” Annette called out as rivers streamed between her fingers.
Blaine’s lips stuttered and the hole in his throat foamed pink. Annette couldn’t tell if he was trying to talk or breathe. Both options were unlikely to happen now.
Thunderous footsteps rolled through the house. Flynn leaped over the banister from the stairs and landed with all the grace of an elephant. He trotted towards them and stared at the body in Annette’s hands.
“Shit. Now they are never going to let us leave.” He said.

I hope you enjoyed this snippet. If I work really diligently I might be able to finish by Christmas. Maybe...

Amazon

Enthralled is now available on amazon! Its the same price as on smashwords, but it might be a little more user friendly.

I'm still figuring things out. Like if I can give my book for free through amazon...I know I can do that with smashwords. I will try to get a better link up to my site soon!

Do we like spoilers? If so, what does that mean for writing?

I keep hearing abut this study done by UCSan Diego that tells us that we will actually enjoy a story more if someone has already ruined the plot twist. Their study included not only literary works, but mysteries, and ironic twist stories as well. (keep in mind that I don’t prescribe to the journal the article was in, so most of my understanding is coming from secondary articles).

This sounds counter intuitive. However, one of the authors of the study argues that we will like the story more because we can spend more time learning the deeper meaning in the story than trying to figure out what is going to happen. Is it true that the plot of a story isn’t as important as writers believe they are?

The study also covered a little about where and when we like to get our spoilers. When given a paragraph outside of the story that told the twist of the work about to be read people enjoyed reading the story the most. But if the spoiler is inserted into the story “It didn’t go over as well”. The article also said that people liked spoilers the least when they were smack dab in the middle. Does that mean we want spoilers, but only from outside sources? Is it possible that we will enjoy a piece the best if given a spoiler right at the beginning of the story? (Like Romeo and Juliet?)

What does this mean for writers? Will literary works become simpler as writers become more engrossed with simply selling the most copies of their book? What will happen to books like Utopia that make us reflect not only about ourselves but society? Will EVERY facet of entertainment slip into the reality-tv-esk plot where characters are never cleverer than getting drunk and stripping?

Maybe I am being overly panicky. They did hypothesize that people don’t care about spoilers because they were looking for the sort of deeper meaning that usually takes a second read through a book. But what’s the point in being clever if people don’t want to read it? Sure it easier to go through life with someone giving us all of the answers, but shouldn’t there be at least a little bit of a struggle for knowledge to make us appreciate it?

Enthralled- promotional coupon

Speaking of coupons I forgot to put this in my last post.

XW33H

Enter the code above to download my book at smashwords for FREE. This coupon expires on the 10th of October, so don't waste this opportunity! A deal like this wont come around again until Christmas. Please remember to review my book after you have finished reading it.

Enthralled - now available

Yes, Enthralled is now available on Smashwords. It has taken a lot of formatting, and has caused me untold amounts of grief. The pain started in word when I couldn't get it to stop certain auto-formatting even though I turned off the autoformatting (Not all of what I learned about Word was bad. Its a much more clever program than I gave it credit for.) Then I had to make all kinds of changes so that Smashwords' automated system would recognize and properly convert the file. I wont go into detail about that. Next, I went to publish it and had the headache of attempting to understand the US tax code. THAT is a mire steeped in lawyer jargon that is incomprehensible to mere mortals like myself. And of course the smashwords web site had to keep crashing while I was converting my book, and my internet was tweeking out in general...Then there was the fear of "do I hit refresh and risk accidentally publishing my book twice? Did it finish converting before the internet crapped out on me?!" After that I noticed the cover image file was not uploading properly and was cut in half for some inexplicable reason. I think I finally fixed that after the 3-4th file upload. Needless to say I wish the process had gone much more smoothly than it did. At least the formatting part will be easier the next time now that I know what I am doing.

Anyway, this post isn't all about complaining. I just felt I should give a heads up. If you find a formatting error please send me an e-mail and I will hunt it down and attempt to fix it. If its something really glaring that I managed to overlook then I may even jot down your name so I can remember to send you a coupon when I write the next one. Smashwords lets me do that :) and the percentage off is of my choosing, but it has to be used at their website.

Another heads up, the MOBI and EPUB formats are the only ones that smashwords loads the cover image on, but I wanted to make sure that the other 6ish formats would also have the cover image. So I had to place it in the beginning of the book. If you use the EPUB or MOBI formats it will look like you have two covers...because you do. Mainly this means that the book will take up a little more space. Just don't be confused if you turn the page and see the same image.

For now Enthralled is only available for purchase through the Smashwords website. You can get it here. Once it has gone through their review process it will be sent out to smashwords' other distributors like apple, Sony, Barns and Noble, Kobo, etc. I will give a shout out when that has been done.

Setting up a smashwords account is free and easy. You can do that here!
I tried out the Adobe Digital Edition earlier today. I like it so far, so I do recommend that you download it if you don't have an ereader.

In case you are wondering, I have started working on the second book in the series this week. It will probably be a few months before I am ready to give a release date. I will keep my blog updated on what stage (ie drafting, writing, editing, etc) I am in.

Well thats it for now. Lets all go out and have a great friday!

The Meaning of Lyrics

Sorry this post has taken so long to get up. I have been rather sick this week, so I have fallen slightly behind.

So I have been listening to alot of Death Cab for Cutie lately. Definetly one of my favorite bands by the way. I have had their Narrow Stairs album for a while now, but everytime I listen to their song titled "Talking Bird" I think that they are saying hope my talking bird, but its actually "oh my talking bird". I guess my subconsious is just supplimenting its own word choice when I hear the song. One little word change, and the song takes on a new meaning. Its kinda funny.

I'll show you what I mean. I'll take the lyrics as shown at azlyrics.com and replace the word "oh" with hope where appropriate. I'll make the changes bold so you wont confuse them with the actual lyrics.

"Talking Bird"

Hope, my talking bird
Though you know so few words
They're on infinite repeat
Like your brain can't keep up with your beak.

And you're kept in an open cage
So you're free to leave or stay.
Sometimes you get confused
Like there's a hint I am trying to give you.

The longer you think, the less you know what to do.

It's hard to see your way out
When you live in a house in a house
Cause you don't realize
That the windows were open the whole time.

Hope, my talking bird
Though your feathers are tattered and furled
I'll love you all your days
Till the breath leaves your delicate frame.

It's all here for you as long as your choose to stay.
It's all here for you as long as you don't fly away.

***
Tell me what you think. I guess there is another possibility. It could be that they are saying hope, but every site I went to with the lyrics was wrong.

I personally like the song better as a metaphore.

I really need to go buy more of their music.

Smashwords

So, I think its time that I talked a little about Smashwords and how I am planning on getting my book out there for people to read. This will involve the business side of writing, which I don't particularly enjoy, and I am sure most people don't like hearing about. I apologize if the money talk turns some readers off, but this could be important for other writers to read. Plus, it will explain to those reading my blog what it is I do with my time, why books will be priced one way or another, which formats my work will be available in, etc.

Smashwords is one of many ebook file converters, and its the one that I am going to use. Why you ask? Not only do they not charge authors/publishers up front just to have their book converted, but they also take the least of the profits out of each book sale. This means that as the author I would get a larger chunk of the profit from the sales. Keep in mind that the money I get is the price of the book minus distributors charges, taxes, and Smashwords' cut. So, depending on the distributor that readers buy through, if I price a book at about $2.99 I will be making something along the lines of $1.30. This may sound like a lot, but most ebook authors are happy if they sell a few thousand books right now. After all,  ebook readers are between 10-20% of the entire book market. This is part of the reason why many still regard indi pubbing, even online, as foolish. Many professionally selling authors that are mid listed make as much as bestselling ebook authors. Let me state this another way: it doesn't matter if I end up making more per book than traditional authors because I will be selling far less books. This is not necessarily due to a lack of skill, its just a smaller market for the time being. (If you want to learn more I suggest reading J. A. Konrath's blog)

Ok. I have gotten a little off topic here because I wanted to talk about Smashwords. So lets get back to that. The main reason that I like Smashwords has nothing to do with the money. Its the distribution. They will convert my book into nearly every ebook format, many of which I had not even head of. Once my work is approved for their "premium catalogue" it will be sent to all of the big time sellers like Apple, Barns and Noble, Sony, Kobo, and many more. One exception is the Amazon store. Although Smashwords does format for distribution on the kindle, it will not show up on Amazon's site until at least December (This is according to the Smashwords site). However, customers can buy books off of Smashwords and download them to their computer. Then they can transfer the file to their ereading device.

For those that choose to purchase books off of their site, Smashwords recommends using the Adobe Digital Editions. Which is a free ebook reading application (This is also useful if you don't have an ereading device like Kindle). That way you can go through Adobe to create an online ID with their site. Then Adobe can recognize the books you have purchased. If you ever loose your data, or want to move your files over to a new ereading device or computer, then the Adobe will have your information stored.I have not used it much myself, so I don't have an opinion about the digital editions, but it sounds cool. Check it out!

For those who want to download books from Smashwords its easy to make a log in. They have a lot of cheap/free ebooks for readers.  Most of which have some portion of the book displayed for sampling. You can also rate the books you read there and see what others have said about books they have read. Keep in mind that you wont find traditionally pubbed authors there.

I think that covers what I wanted to mention about Smashwords. I hope this was informative.

Here is a quick update about Enthralled. I am in my last round of editing. I have gone through it several times myself, but I needed other people to look at it for me to catch any misspellings etc that I missed. I have read it so many times that my eyes kind of skim over the words. After that's done I will need to quickly copyright it and format if for Smashwords' converter. Then it will be available on their website. It could take a week or two after that for Enthralled to be put in their premium catalog, so it wont be available through most app stores until then. I will post when my book will be available on Smashwords, and when it has reached full distribution. I look forward to hearing what you think!

Enthralled - first introduction

I promised yesterday that my second post would have the cover art and synopsis for my book and here it is.

Annette has had nightmares for as long as she can remember. However, it was not until a strange encounter that Annette realizes her dreams have a deeper meaning than she could have imagined. In her search for answers, Annette is drawn into a world of dangerous creatures that humans long ago reduced to the realm of myths. Once drawn in, Annette can never return to the life she knew.

The art was done by Claudia McKinney at http://phatpuppyart.com/
I honestly cant say enough nice things about her. I love her work, and she was a pleasure to work with. The whole writing experience suddenly felt real after I got my cover from her. Its just stunning! I highly recommend checking out her website, where you can see her other pieces.

First Post Ever

Hello everyone out there on the internet trying to find ways to entertain themselves. Most of you are probably not looking forward to yet another blog site, with yet another dippy person talking about themselves. Well, you are in luck, because I'm not either.

I have little interest in talking about myself. As a person, I dont find myself terribly interesting. I am, however, interested in talking about my work, and that is the point of this blog I'm starting.

I write fantasy. If I could, I would live and breath it. For you see, I am what people call an escapist. I find the world of the imaginary a much more comforting place than the real world.

In our minds, we can create a place in which we are the only masters. We make every decision, and make ourselves as powerful or powerless as we want.

Thats why, if you are at all similar to me, you love books, movies, and videogames. Of course, my main focus with my posts will be about writing. More specifically, what ever my project(s) are.

I'm currently finishing my book Enthralled.  Which should be available to purchase friday, oct 7.  It will be available through smashwords. Once it is published I will attach a link on my site, but only after I have looked it over to make sure the conversion went smoothly.

For those who are not familiar with smashwords, it is a site that converts documents into ebook formatting for authors, like myself, and distributes them to nearly every kind of ereader. It also allows readers to download books, and even sample them before they purchase them. I will explain more about smashwords in a later post.

I really hope that those who read my writing will enjoy it. If you do read Enthralled please review it. Good or bad, I want you to be honest.

In my next post I will put up the cover art, as well as a synopsis.
Thanks for reading. I look forward to your responses.
